FATE BY DESIGN

The shadow grows, though deathly still,
In candlelight, weary of will...
On cavern walls, cold as a tomb,
Through mists of magick's sweet perfume.
An open book, an ageless lore.
Sightless eyes look beyond the fore,
To glean clearly from well wrought line
A glimpse of fate, if by design.

Wretched and frail, a shaking hand
Page by page avails Time's demand.
Hour by hour, withering away,
Day becomes night, night becomes day.
A soul long dead, searching for life.
A dream well fed, a loving wife.
Eyes once beheld, a day long past.
Now lifelong search for Time's recast.

A silver robe negligently
Would speak of forgone luxury.
Royal emblem about the breast,
A long forgotten regal crest.
The family scourge, the Prince of Pain,
Seeking a dream left in the rain.
King next in line, honor pristine,
Forwent to find who would be queen.

In dimmened light sunken eyes tear.
Perhaps hope now gives way to fear.
Upon his neck the laughing breath
Of ‘er anticipating Death.
Closing the book in mental sigh,
A pinched candle would seem goodbye.
Palm placed to book, the torn soul cries,
To life mistook, closes his eyes.

In pouring rain, walking alone,
A peasant's life, hers to atone...
A carriage close, she steps aside.
The splash of mud does nil to pride.
But the horses stop with a shout.
And there a stately man steps out.
Silver attire sets heart astir,
Why would this young Prince stop for her?

Michael Anderson

For all behind was dark and drear,
And all before was night and fear.
How many hours of night or day
In those suspended pangs I lay,
I could not tell; I scarcely knew
If this were human breath I drew.

Lord Byron

Michael; Romantic, dark and flowing with pain and loss, with a hint of hope. Beautifully written. Miss you at Spiritual!

Michael~
This is so tenderly written.
I particularly enjoyed this line -

'Closing the book in mental sigh,
A pinched candle would seem goodbye'

Says so much - when the light of love
goes out - it's glow no longer exists.
Ahhh ! But does there come another to
light the flame that will set the heart
aglow with her light ?
A new book is then written by her light.

As he looked back he saw the beauty from within...dramatic by design   Excellent!

That time of year thou mayst in me behold, When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang, Upon those boughs which shake against the cold, Bare ruined choirs where late the sweet birds sang. In me thou see'st the twilight of such day, As after sunset fadeth in the west, Which by-and-by black night doth take away, Death's second self that seals up all in rest. In me thou see'st the glowing of such fire, That on the ashes of his youth doth lie, As the deathbed whereon it must expire, Consumed with that which it was nourished by. This thou perciev'st, which makes thy love more strong, To love that well which thou must leave ere long.
William Shakespeare

this was exquisitely done. It must have taken work but seems to flow. The Gothic realism mixed with romanticism makes it magic!!!! The ending line leaves me wanting more., how romantic!!
it is....haunting...

Jon, anything can be in a world of magick and imagination...

serenity,   you have a little magick all your own, you know that?

ellie, Glad to see you, I miss being in Spiritual too, I will be back soon - I promise.

Marge, You always speak words of wisdom and truth.  Indeed there is a new book to be written and one of even more magical proportion me thinks.  Must be that karma thing you always speak of.

Lady Sofia, Indeed, nothing material or otherwise comes into play when "true love" speaks to the heart...

Janet, It's much easier to "write" a happy ending than to achieve one for some of us - but I know there is one awaiting this story.  Unlike this wizzard I write of, I don't hink I will traverse back into the past to find mine.

X-Angel, ya know - I need to do a little more prose, anyway - perhaps i will take you up on that...

Mistick, I am glad you were able to percieve it vividly...

PdV, LOL at making you sigh... sorry 'bout that.

brian, Ty. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem.

Irish Rose, TY, I did put a little extra effort into this one, (Was hard not to just keep writing on and on too).  i like this magick stuff, ya know?

Thank you all for the gracious comments.

Michael,

Sigh....it is not up to us to question why.  All we have to do is choose to act on what is put in front of us.  I really like this one.  Romance, mystery, sorrow, hope...just love the royalty theme.  Fascinating!!

It pains me to admit this, but I must have missed something ... where did the "young Prince" come from?  Was that a flashback...?  Maybe I'm just not reading it right (LOL -- that NEVER happens ... ) -- will come back to this one later, preferably after an in-depth from the source ...

--Me

Full fathom five thy father lies,
Of his bones are coral made,
Those are pearls that were his eyes;
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange...

Lonewolf, It is up to us to act on our feelings, or live with wondering what if... in the end, we do design our own fate after all...

Kess, the young prince is the same "old" prince who forwent his royalty to learn magic for the sole reason of turning time back to the one point his carriage passed that girl in the rain... has something to do with love me thinks...LOL and don't feel bad - not many have truly understood this one.

Amy, we would all do well to follow our instincts me thinks... and I never "really" ask why

Thank you all for the kind replies...

Michael

How bout a story and a 30 or so page epic poem?    Stunning, as always my friend.  You have the kind of talent that I dream of.  I anxiously await more of your wonderful poetry.

Michael* I'm always inspired by the way you weave the words into a beautiful wrap of love and life and in this the tale of letting love pass us by, due to what is expected rather than what we want.

Seeking a dream left in the rain.
King next in line, honor pristine,
Forwent to find who would be queen

Hindsight is usually 20/20...and painfully so would be nice to have the chance to turn back and "re-do" once in a while too.  Thank you for sharing your gift Michael it's always a pleasure to read your work.
