I watched the silent movies,
Upon the silver screen…
Roy, and Rex, and Hoppy-
And joined them in my dreams.

I never stopped to wonder-
What difference sound would make.
But when the sound tracks came around…
I did a double take.

For I could hear the hoofbeats…
And hear the crack of guns…
Entertaining, I suppose-
Those first, and simple ones.

But then there followed “talkies”…
And voice came to the screen.
The mushy “love you, darlings”-
And “I worship you, my queen’s”.

But then the issues of the heart-
Steam from a kettle’s spout…
Fear, hate, and degradation…
These, too, came boiling out.

My mind retains the things I’ve heard
And all the things I’ve seen,
The things I’ve said to others
And the things they’ve said to me.

Sometimes I find myself alone…
And slip back in my dreams.
And wish that life were really like…
Those days,  of silent screens.

Those voices in our mind can certainly torment us at times, can't they? Silence would truly be golden at such moments.

Now, did you really get to see 'silent' movies or is this a bit of imagination at work here? I know we are near the same age and 'talkies' were already around for awhile when I was old enough to go to the theatre. I did see a few on T.V. though on a station that used to broadcast them. I prefer the 'talkies'!

Gunslinger, the days of yesteryear are gone forever, sadly.  Life may have been difficult then but it was a time when people looked after each other and it was not the fast paced, drug crazed world it is today.  And,
most importantly, it was long before Bill
Clinton (hehe)
~~enjoyed your poem~~
