THE DAFFODIL

She is the first to bloom in the spring,
lifting her head towards the sun to sing
of love and laughter, caring and giving,
sharing the joy she feels in living.

But each night as the sun leaves the sky,
she lowers her head and begins to cry.
Loneliness shadows her face in repose,
Again he’s picked the tulip and rose.

Always waiting to be chosen and then,
always passed over again and again.

The sun will rise and she will show
the cheery face they all may know.
But when again, she is passed by,
The evening comes and she retreats with a sigh.

Always waiting to be chosen and then,
always passed over again and again.

No one can tell during the hours of light,
of the secret desires that haunt her night.
To never be left alone to die
never again, alone to cry.

Always waiting to be chosen and then,
always passed over again and again.

Pick me she sighs, pick me please…
but behind the smile, no one sees
The tears that are shed with a silent moan,
she is never chosen
she dies
alone

I fall before you, as this is by far the most beautiful thing you have ever written!  Of course, I'm partial to daffofils...    Maybe that's why I found it to be so beautiful.  I like how you kept repeating those 2 lines...made a big impact on me, the reader.  And so sad...the ending.  Bravissimo!  Such a delicate, heartwrenching tale!   You spun it so lovely though.

Just beautiful deVine. . . even the daffodils get picked by those who know their true beauty. . .

Wonderful my friend. . .

PoetdeVine~
This is so gosh-darned sweet !
Now ya' got me crying for that poor
little daffodil.

Do not cry, little daffodil.
Your day will someday come.
Lift your blossom of beauty
to the warmth of the glowing sun.

When roses bleed red
and tulips turn blue
there will still
be a place for you.

Sunshine bright
is your hue ...
Smile little daffodil
for I LOVE YOU !

Oh Sharon!
I have never felt so bad for a flower before!
This is beautiful and sad! I say she's left in the flower
bed for every one to see her beauty before she is picked. Though,
I suggest that person hurries and picks her before some one else
comes along and admires her.
Beauty that is ignored, will be lost to someone else.
Womderful Poem!

No, Poet deVine, No. The daffodil will never die alone.

I think this is what will happen.

When all the roses and tulips are picked, the daffodil will be there still smiling, as it does each day, and then he will realize the sincerity and intensity of the daffodil's soul and her strength of character, and will appreciate the daffodil. Pick her, he definitely will, but will also keep her closest to his heart.

Oh, I am sorry to not have said this so far, this is a great poem, really made me think whether, I in my life have overlooked any smiling daffodil. I am happy to know that I haven't  done so yet, and this poem will stay lingering in my heart forever to prevent me from overlooking any daffodil... Thanks for the poem and the inspiration to start a thought process...

Regards,
Sudhir.

Thank you all for your kind words. I really am not starting a 'save the daffodil' movement, though it is also my favorite flower, the symbol of spring to me.  The daffodil also symbolizes unrequited love...that's why I wrote this poem. *sigh*

I just love this poem. The flow, the Rhyme, all loveliness. The message that we need to really pay attention to, the loveliness that is in the heart of each creation of Gods. also, thank you for your wonderful response to my poem. Ellie

PDV: The title caught my eye... daffodils are my favorite flower. *S* I didn't know they represented unrequited love... but boy, can I ever identify with the "pick me!" cries being ignored and dying alone! *G*

I'd applaud... 'cept I'm busy wiping tears. *S* Beautiful!!

Sharon...oh my, what can I say? This is so sad I sit here with tears in my eyes, but darn it's so well written. I think this has to be my favorite of all of your work.

The Daffodil is also strong and independent and grows among many in sunny upturned glory...the prettiest view from the street, in perfection still growing and free...and un-picked.  Love the poem, Sharon...made me think daffodil.

Hummm, let's see, reasons I like this poem...well, there's Sunshine, and hope eternal, the requisite sadness, and of course the repetitive

"Always waiting to be chosen and then,
always passed over again and again."

Sounds like something that pleases me much, it does!  Good job, Sharon!

What fabulous writing you exhibit here to tell your tale. Flowers are beautiful, yet so is each and every human and creature we pass by each day. Thanks for sharing this poem here with us.

Oh, this is a wonderful poem. It really touched me! It's sad to think what untapped beauty there is because we have judged by looks instead of charactor.

Your poem! Gasp! It made me swim inside. Love is like a your flower, which grows and endures hardship time and time again, until the bud blooms and show its beautiful face. This one may have been passed over again and again, but the day will come when someone falls for its inner beauty, digs it up and plants it before his house to spread its seed across his lawn and grace his world with its presence   This was a creative pleasure to read, and mayhap there was a metaphor...? lol Truly wonderful!

Oh boy!!!...or should that be, oh girl!!!

I love it when I see all the bulbs in my garden and know that they will grow to smile and turn their heads to the sun and my tulips all come out about 3 or 4 days later and the mix and match in colour just makes me smile so much but if I had to chose which I would pick, I'd have to say them all but then I would be left with a bare garden and I couldn't just pick one or two....when it's hot, like now and they are comeing to the end of their life I like to sit with a few lit lanterns in the garden and enjoy their beauty but I think I may be tempted to give each one a good night kiss...

Beautiful!...Guess we all turn our heads to the sun, just like our daffs..

this is really a good lay out, it all flows together really nicely.
i have never heard such a sad poem about a daffodil, or any story about a daffodil. i love them, i used to think they where the luckyest flowers, because they had to sets of petals. any how lovely use of words. i love it when a poem flows.

That was beautiful and sad, I love daffodils,
they seem to pop up over night when spring arrives. They are one of my favourite flowers, I always love to see them in large groups on the lawn. They are nicer there than in a vase, maybe the person in the poem realised that. either way lovely, fantastic poem.
