“I wonder what the future holds”? The old man said to me. Forty, somehow, seems so old… When one is twenty-three. “I made a pile, with perfect style- The bottle brought me down. Why early in the fifties… I took the “All Around”- Back then I had my choice of girls- A different one each night. “Buckle polishers” I guess… I know that isn’t right. I rode the bare-back ponies- I’d really shine my boots… Sometimes at night I hear the cheers, When I’d come out the chutes. I married Amy Chadwick- A rare, fine lady, too… It broke my heart, the night she called- To tell me we were through. Whose fault? Why, mine! I did her wrong- And that, time after time… When Amy left, I drank the more- It started my decline. Till now, my name is like a joke- I’d give you some advice… If you would follow down that road… I’d think about it twice”! I watched him as he limped away. Then hunted up a phone… Said, “Hon, I’ve got to ride tonight- And then I’m headed home. I’ll “turn out” there, at OKC- I’ll spend next week with you- And, babe, I sure am sorry… For all I’ve put you through”. I owe the man a mighty debt- And I don’t know his name… No doubt it must be written large- In the “Loser’s Hall of Fame”. |

Thanks for giving me something to think about, just barely an adult I often forget about the responsibilities of life. Your story has helped me to keep my feet a little bit more grounded. Well written. |
