The Farmer's Wife I know we should appreciate Having good fathers and mothers. But when they got up to do chores I appeciated brothers. I snuggled in my feather bed Dreaming of silks and fine laces. There was no man in the whole world With whom I'd have traded places. 'Twas then I met a feminist Who'd insist I'd been mistreated. She implored me to understand That all men must be defeated. I met a handsome farmer, who Soon asked me to be his loved wife. I thought that would be just dandy. We would have such a happy life. I thought again of "women's lib", And informed him that we must share. That man just stood there with a grin. He said he thought that sounded fair. He said he'd be glad to let me Get up early to milk the cows. He'd be happy to lie abed In our cozy-warm, little house. The first time that he called me up For my turn to do all the chores, I wished that feminist was there. I would have shoved her out those doors. The milk cows were mean and cranky. They made me want to yell and shout. So this was the equality That busy-body talked about. That morning after breakfast, we Had another heart to heart chat. He still just stood there grinning, when I said my plan had fallen flat. I guess that feminist woman Didn't know much about farm life. She should have said "equality" Does not apply to a farm wife. Joyce: The women always milked the cows on the farms I grew up on and even young girls, but none of us ever "slopped the hogs". Betty Lou Hebert |

Hi: I guess I was pretty much of a 'kept' woman too, Serenity. Dad didn't let us near the barns and I never milked a cow,or slopped a pig. I did gather eggs if the hens were out of the hen house, Trillium. Joyce [This message has been edited by Joyce Johnson (07-06-2002 12:16 AM).] |

I guess you have to be careful what you wish for.... the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

Hee hee, this is so cute, Joyce! I was an only child, I had to do everything, sigh...(well, a brother arrived when I was 13 -- not much help, I'm afraid!) Underneath your humor lies some basic wisdom! Lary |

Thank you Pegasus and Laryalee. I was so grateful for those older brothers. I had it really easy. Love, Joyce [This message has been edited by Joyce Johnson (07-06-2002 03:57 PM).] |
