Three crones from the Barren Hills so named Rachel, Mary and Eve; tired and fraught with long life decided to end the reign of man and his wars and hate and greed. Thus and so they traveled down to fish in the brineless sea, to stalk the old man of the lake who swallowed world into the dark so many years ago. Under the waxing night; silver hooks were baited with scrawny chicken necks, rotted gizzards and livers, and secret woman things cast forth from lunar tides jarred by the dark of the moon. Rachel, Mary, and Eve were patient in their wait throughout the endless revolving seasons, for there was time in this no time, as they sat and chat about this and that. About how the world could be without the wars, pain and greed. A new time turned out in hope, love, and rooted compassion. After eons of shifting tides, breaking stones and crashing waves, the old whiskered man of the lake unable to resist the bloody lure, and bite with a huge greedy gulp to be pulled forth from the ebony pool flopping on the ground of reality. Rachel gouged out his one orb. (if thy left eye offends thee-pluck it out) Eve gouged out his second orb. (if thy right eye offends thee-pluck it out) And Mary, being brave and bold slitted the heaving gut of mankind to pluck forth the swirled blue marble, to swallow it whole and then she dove into the deep brineless sea. On the shore, under the light in a moment of flashing green Rachel and Eve joined hands to dance the dance of beginnings, to sing hosannas in the new dawn to plait with joyful hands a stairway of hope as the land's tilted planes trembled and the earth reverse revolution as Mary in the bottomless depths gave birth to a brave new world-set free. a lovely fantasy dancer. It is interesting that the ogre in this plot is male and the saviors of the world are female. Maybe God should have pulled the rib from Adam, made Eve, and thrown the rest away.... ![]() the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |
