A Hostile Presence

I know I entered unafraid,
Impressed with what a sight it made.
This house of brick, in good repair,
Although it had been standing there
Almost a century they say.
But now the owner's moved away
And wants to rent the lower floor,
Though up above it, are two more.
One floor is quite enough for me.
The footage is so large you see.
I wandered through the rooms and then,
As I turned to stroll again,
I heard a noise above my head.
Like someone bouncing on a bed.
I knew I was supposed to be
The only one that had a key.
Then other sounds began to creep
Into my hearing. Made pulse leap,
As footsteps, furtive, on the stair,
Came towards the door, I was aware,
That I was shivering with cold.
A mindless dread began to hold
Me frozen to the spot with fear
To face whoever would appear.
But nothing happened, yet I knew
That in the room there now were two!
