Mamma's Apron Mamma wore an ample apron To cover her clean dress. She'd tell you that's what it was for If you'd asked her, I would guess. But that apron had more uses Than I could even count. It brought in eggs and vegetables In unlimited amount. I've seen her use that apron To wipe her dripping brow As she labored over the big range That's a valued antique now. Her apron could bring giggles In a game of peek-a-boo With her newest, sweet grandbaby As she hid her face from view. And when we kids were crying We'd run to find her lap And wipe the falling tears away With a bit of apron flap. That apron dusted tables And shooed away the flies And did just fine as oven mitts To take out bubbling pies. But the greatest of the treasures That old apron could hold Was the endless love from Mamma Abiding in each fold. By: Joyce 7/8/06 |

Joyce~ You caused sweet tears of remember to fall with this one ... my greatest great grandmother had just such an apron~ Of all the items I was blessed to receive after her passing .. one of the pinafore aprons holds my fondest memories~ And nostalgically, it still smells like great grandmother Anna Maude Wainright~ Oh ... what a remember~ Thank you dear lady~ *Huglets* ~*Marge*~ ~*The sound of a kiss is not as strong as that of a cannon, but it's echo endures much longer*~ |

I always wished for a mom like that. But I grew up in foster care. Thank you for the poem though as it reminded me again of how the Lord God has always been my parents. Hugs Kimberly |

Dear Joyce: Well, this one really took me back a long ways. I still have one of my grandmother's bib type aprons. I will leave it to one of the girls in my family some day. It is a treasure just like the one in your lovely poem. Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

I wish I had saved one of my mother's aprons but I think she discarded them after she raised her family. Joyce |

DearTina, Thanks for the site address, I looked it up and yes surely there are resemblances. I had not read that poem before writing my own. These are all clear memories of my mother and I guess she used her apron in much the way your grandma did, thus the resemblance. I asked that question on a forum once. How can we be sure we aren't recalling a forgotten poem and think it is our own when one inspires us? At that time I was alluding to a poem I had written called, My Sailor Boy which seemed to come from someplace other than my own mind but no one recognized it as any they had ever seen before. However in this case I know exactly where my inspiration originated. It was clearly pictured memories of my own mother and her friendly and versatile apron. Hope to see some of your other works. Love, Joyce |

Hi Joyce. Sorry, I didn't mean to infer that you had seen my work. Sorry if it came across that way. I love your poem. I was able to get one of my Grandmothers aprons from my mother. Something I will treasure always. |
