Noisy Neighbors

The moon was high when I went out.
I thought I heard a distant shout.
Sound carries in the desert air.
I looked around and everywhere
The shadowed places stared at me,
But there was nothing I could see
That would account for what I'd heard.
Perhaps some strange, nocturnal bird?
I stood awhile and listened for
Some reason I should go explore.

Then suddenly, this awful din
Began behind my small cabin
And round the corner, at full trot,
Came wild burros and I thought,
Why did God give them such a bray?
He must have wanted it that way!
They jogged away and before long,
I couldn't hear their dreadful song,
But now all thought of sleep had fled,
So no use heading for my bed!
Though I enjoy them in daylight,
I wish they'd stay away at night!

latearrival:  Thanks!  Actually, burros can be very quiet and more than once I had one come up behind me and let out a big bray that sent me straight up in the air! I did enjoy seeing them and thought they were really cute animals. They are also very curious and it was often that we would look up from whatever we were doing and see a group of them staring at us from a short distance away!

What a cute poem.  It makes me wonder where these burros came from.  Surely they are not naturally wild.  Perhaps some miners left them behind when their mines ran out?  I'm just back from our family reunion in Iowa and trying to catch up.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce:  Happy Birthday! I hope you had a great trip! Thanks for reading.

I assume, as you do, that most of the wild burros, were left behind by miners many years ago, or pack train owners, who turned them loose when through with them. There were many herds of them where our mine is in Nevada.  A really delightful little animal.

Trillium,

I was really drawn into your experience here and was quite surprised that what you heard were burros... WOW! You really do have quite a connection with all different kinds of nature and it is such a blessing and such a blessing it is also for us as we have the opportunity to read about it.

God bless you and thank you for sharing.

This was really cute.  I once sat on one as we had one with all the other horses and I got bucked off it.  I never got back on a horse after that until I was in the military.  That is a really great memory for me thank you for bringing it back.

Hugs Kimberly

Hi Bob:  Thanks for reading and the kind comments. I have been very fortunate to have lived in a variety of environments.  I really enjoyed them all. When we first went to Nevada, it was to be for 6 months and we stayed for 17 years! We saw fascianting country there!

Hi Kimberly:  Glad this one brought you some happy memories, although getting bucked off of a burro doesn't not sound like a lot of fun to me! I never attempted to even get close to them, although sometimes, as in the poem, I had no choice!

Growing up on a farm, we got all manner of wildlife running through our yard and it was pretty normal for us ... I'm not sure what I'd do if a bunch of burros ran around the house though lol .. Loved the read

Thank you for sharing

Hi Sheli:  Thanks for reading.  At least burros are not hostile!  They're cute little animals!

Dear Betty Lou

This is a lovely poem and it made me laugh!  If I had a choice between your 'noisy neighbor's' and the human variety, I'd know which one I would choose!  Eh! Eh!

Love Verbena xo

Dear Verbena:

You're right. Even wild burros are preferable to some neighbors I've had!
