In Summer Meadows When twilight came, I wandered out, To see if wildlife was about. Across the meadow, I could see A herd of elk approaching me. I used a tree to screen my frame. The elk kept coming, just the same. The breeze behind them, gave no clue, That I was keeping them in view! It's April, so the bulls are bare Of massive antlers that they wear, Except in spring, when new ones grow, To be displayed for autumn's show. It's then they vie for harem mates, Although for now, the future waits And all is peaceful as they browse. Yearlings, bulls and pregnant cows. Soon now, the females and the young Will break away. New life is sprung In summer meadows.I won't see Just when this increase comes to be, For they'll be high in hills of green, Not where they can be easily seen. Right now, I'm relishing the sight, Of grazing elk, in day's last light! ( Betty Lou Hebert [This message has been edited by Trillium (04-18-2003 10:13 PM).] |

SPIRIT: Thanks so much! I should carry a camera with me, like Marge does. I don't think I could get close enough to the elk to get a good picture, however. They are in that meadow almost every evening now. Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Marge: Maybe elk will eat apples or carrots? Deer love bread.......make it whole wheat.........so maybe elk will eat that too? Be sure and take pictures before you shoo them away! Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

I feel sorry for people who don't live close to the earth they miss so much. Even if I lived in a cement jungle I would find a place to be outdoors to be in touch with nature. Great poem. |

Denise: Thanks for reading and appreciate your comments. We have lived in the country for the last 32 years. Before that lived in Portland, Oregon and Seattle WA. Once we made the break, to country life, we knew we'd never go back to city living! Of course, that's much easier said than done, many times. Betty Lou Hebert |

kitkat: You're right we are lucky to live in the country and have access to viewing the wildlife here. There isn't as much as when we moved out here 25 years ago, but there is still almost a daily sighting of something! We do enjoy it! Thanks. Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |
