Thanks, Lighthousebob and Marge.

I was thinking along the lines of the 17th century surgeons...using hot glass cups and other horrible 'therapies'.

I suppose it's a comment on extreme faith in 'One Blessed Religion' being able to cure all ills, in the process, destroying healthy cells. I hope it can also be taken in a personal sense, between two people.
