Bowl of Cherries

"Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries".
Do you remember that song?
Of course you don't, my dear children.
You've not been alive that long.

I don't remember who sang it,
But I cheerily hummed along
As the words came across on the radio
Becoming a top selling song.

I didn't doubt for a moment
That my life would be ice-cream and cake
With a big bowl of cherries to munch on;
Sweet goodies all waiting to take.

I've eaten my share of ripe cherries,
So many they started to pall;
While the bitter fruits added in measure
Make cherries more sweet in recall.

This is your season, my darlings;
So savor each last luscious bite.
Now while yet young, more songs to be sung,
Enjoy your "Cherries Delight".

Joyce~
I kind of remember my grandmother swooning to this tune ... at the time I believe she was a big fan of Rudy Vallee's ... and that is the one I remember her singing along with on the radio~

I love it when you share such nostalgia with us~

I don't think it goes back to Rudy Valee.  I can't remember him but it could have been Bing Crosby.  He was my favorite.  Thanks for the kind words.  Love, joyce

I don't know the song, though of course I've heard the saying. The fruits of life are so sweet.....well, most of the time!

Joyce, This is a wonderful poem of memories, although I don't quite remember that song I can relate to your poem of life and expectations. Dennis

Joyce,

Although I have too experienced quite a belly ache after eating too much, a bunch or a bowl of cherries myself, still, I think that your poem is a most delightful song of wisdom here to the youth while still young to enjoy life and to enjoy the "Cherries Delight" or any and all other blessings that may come their way. Enjoyed reading and God bless.

I don't remember the song, but I have heard it as a saying, and it does hold very true. Many chrries are sweet but there will alway be a few bitter ones, just like life and our adventures within. Great poem I enjoyed very much.

Dear Joyce

This is Rudy Vallee's lyrics of "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries":

Life is just a bowl of cherries;
Don’t make it serious;
Life’s too mysterious.
You work, you save, you worry so,
But you can’t take your dough when you go, go, go.
So keep repeating it’s the berries;
The strongest oak must fall.
The sweet things in life
To you were just loaned,
So how can you lose what you’ve never owned?
Life is just a bowl of cherries,
So live and laugh at it all.

Rudy Vallee and Bing Crosby were before my time but I do like Bing Crosby songs.

Your poem is so 'sweet'!

Love Verbena xo

I really like this poem. It flows so well and it is fun to read.  You write your thoughts with a graceful ease.
