SHADES OF GRAY

I am but a wisp of who I was
A soul lingering, hovering
Over what was and is no more.
The image of me
You have displayed
In a shiny frame,
One of the better ones
Of so many
…that you could have chosen.

It flatters me,
Paints me in shades of white.
I look gracious…innocent even
With a wholesomeness
That I could never lay claim too.
How calm I look
I am portrayed with clarity
And much dignity.
A lady of honor
Your mother
…your grandmother.

Sweet children, how I love you,
I am complimented
By those small but significant lies
That sit embroidered
… by silver and behind glass.
You have not shown
The mean-spirited me
With the regretful mouth.
Or the moodiness
That resided within.

The quick temper
I must lay claim to
Is softened…
By your portrait of me
But my transgressions
Are too many
For me to cast aside,
Unacknowledged.

Remember me
…but I would prefer
To be not clothed
In an innocence I never knew,
Nor in the black
Of a witch’s weeds,
For I was but human
So color me
…please…
…in shades of gray.
