The Windsor Witch

A ship is anchored in the bay.
I watched it move to tidal sway.
I was surprised to see it there.
The moon last night was big and fair
And threw a path of silver sheen
Where now this sailing ship is seen.

Her sails are furled, though gray and old.
Her figurehead looks pale and cold.
I hail the bridge; there's no reply.
I go on board to see if I
Can find a clue to her intent,
About her crew and where they went.

The deck needs varnish, though I see
Her lines are all coiled Flemishly.
The hold smells musty; there's no gear
To show that sailors bunked down here.
No food on board. The water kegs
Are down to brackish smelling dregs.

The captain's cabin yields no trace
Of the ship's log.The empty space
Breathes mystery and something more
That makes me hurry out the door!
There is an atmosphere of dread
And many notions fill my head!

But none seem plausible to me,
So I will have to wait and see
What is revealed. What comes to light.
It's eerie when I wake at night
To see her moving on each swell.
I think sometimes I hear her bell
Ring out the hours, but I know
That this, of course, just isn't so.

Nobody knows from whence she came.
Nor have they ever heard her name.
The Windsor Witch is on her stern.
Her port of call, we've yet to learn.
The people from the city pier
Are going to move her out of here.
Her long boat's gone and so they say
The crew did surely row away.

Where did they go, abandoning
Their ship? It must have been something
Quite dire to induce the need
To disappear with stealth and speed.
Perhaps we'll never know at all!
I wonder what fate will be-fall
This Windsor Witch and will she sail
Once more through wind and fearsome gale?

Dear Joyce:  A lot of what I write is sheer imagination! This is one of them. Thanks.

a very clever write ( as usual ). Your range is something to be envied.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

BettyLou~
You sent me on a merry chase !

BUT ... as usual I learned some interesting facts !

Found a US Commissioned Ship called the Waterwitch ...
http://www.portcolumbus.org/wwpics.htm

... very interesting reading~

AND ... I also wrote to Antiqubook.com and received the following in response to my inquiry~
quote:
Marge

Thanks for the enquiry. Sorry, it does not have the Windsor Witch. The
nearest is the Waterwitch.

Oh my gosh!!  At first I thought this may be about moi! ROTFL!!
First of all...
I live in a city called Windsor.
And my hubby is a professional wizard/magician..
that makes me a witch, right?

When I stopped laughing and read this I understood more.
And what a great write it is!!

Thank you Marge for the further information as well.

Hugs to you Betty Lou!

BettyLou~

'somewhere in time'

Yep ... I can 'almost' guarantee it~

Poetic thoughts
sail an endless sea
in search of the ink
to let them be
A poem that causes
others to think
You did that here ...
YEP !
that's what I think !

Write on dear poetess~
