Nightmare of Nightmares

In travel through this world of dreams, play my little game
You may find, that sleep for you, is never quite the same
Dream that you have found, a perfect place and time
Smell of wildflowers fills the air, temperatures sublime

You’re many miles from anywhere, no one else will come
The waterfall is murmuring, not beating like a drum
Later in the evening, you’ve gone to have your rest
Suddenly you feel it. Weight upon your chest

There are no rapid movements, nothing much to fear
Then you hear the rattle. A hiss glides through the air
You know you cannot move. A snake has found a home
Curled up on your chest, to keep him nice and warm

With eyes like slits you’re wondering, if you dare to look
A single tear rolls from your eye. That was all it took
Silence…. Total silence….. in your little place
Head is right above you. Staring at your face

Malevolent the gaze. Primal as the earth
Tremble in your loins. Hold still for all your worth
Eyes squeezed shut in terror. Feel it taste your tears
Tongue is like a drill. Draining out your fears

Cannot move. Dare not move. Know how fast they strike
You know you would be dead, from just a single bite
Try to move your arm, to fling the snake away
Knowing as you move, this is your final day

The bite is to your open throat. Feel the venom run
Never more, will you watch, the rising of the sun
Everything will fade. In agony and pain
You’ll never sing and dance, nor taste real love again

As you’re lying there, you understand all things
Gratefully you realise, this was just a dream
Tremble as you waken. Knowing you’ve been blessed
Then Knowledge…….
