Like the moth drawn irresistibly to the deadly flame Knowing it’s danger but mesmerized by it’s beauty I come to you Explosions of reality inundate my brain Pounding cruelly against the fantasy I have created For myself, for us Somewhere deep in my subconscious I know But I reject the knowledge Flailing in futile helplessness against the thought The signs are there, everywhere But I am a blind man in the light Searching, probing, finding only empty dreams Silent echoes my reward Why do I continue the charade Playing the game already lost Telling myself all will be well I know you care, just not enough Not the gut busting all consuming Frantic way I care for you What went wrong Was it the commitment The unfamiliar tenderness I return endlessly to the traffic signal in your heart Willing it to change Knowing it won’t Forcing myself to pretend it’s new We’re new There must be a way There isn’t It’s hopeless Retreat from the fire that consumes me There are only bitter ashes after all I can’t Don’t you see I forgot how to say goodbye the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |
