Silver notes in gilded cage. A body small and tired. Wings clipped to view; given enough to eat, in the name of love. A looking glass to preen in, reflection of bars and sorrow. Naked before a blind audience, in a playground for one. Tiny heart throbs silently, under a ruffling of feathers. Protected, warm, sheltered, from freedom, from life. from death. I know why the caged bird sings, as tears pool beneath her. Securely bound to her pedastal. Liberty buried within, the blindness of his love. Her notes a whisper of silver, are all that can be free. Defiance soaring unfettered and beyond a gilded cage. |

Dear Junemac: We have never kept birds, just because I can't stand to see them caged. It's too pitiful! Your poem is so sensitive! Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

I very rarely, as most on here can attest, reply to poetry, though I read a great deal of it. I initially came in because the title is the same as the Maya Angelou poem, and it was so powerfully written that I actually went to check and see if it was the same... my apologies for doubting you. This is a masterful poem, and is definately one of the best I have seen on this site. Here is the other one in case anyone wants to compare the two. To be merciful to the cruel is to be cruel to the merciful. www.impressionsintime.net |
