A slim wedge of weak light streaked across the floor,

a cat-walk illuminating dancing dust motes.

Her breath escaped - a sigh answering the dark.

She was home, home with her ghosts.

Lifting her crisp petticoats she tread familiar floorboards,

“shhh” she whispered,

“hush now ”.

Carefully she placed the jug upon the night-stand ,

And turned to meet their eyes.

Hope and love, yes love shone in them

Expectation and relief.

A slim figure silhouetted in a darkened room

Apron of starch and expression to match.

The nurse so gently regarded the men

Who would never see the light of day again.

“hush now “she whispered,

as she bathed their wounds.

“I am here “ she crooned,

dispensing magic and love.

And the ghost’s of war were laid to rest,

for a short while.

junemac:  An intriguing poem!  The nurses who take care of our wounded, deserve medals too!

Hi Joyce and Betty Lou, Thanks for your replies. I am glad you enjoyed reading this one. It is kind of like prose poetry. I sometimes enjoy making a story poem : )
