April Fool

I must be on the watch today
When things are not as they may seem.
The first of April brings strange tricks.
I see those mischievous eyes gleam.

You offer me a stick of gum;
It's wrapper and nothing within.
When I pretend that I am fooled
You shout an "April Fool" and grin.

My darling child I've seen them all
And I've been fooled by more than one;
But from a trickster sweet as you
I'll take the tricks and call them fun.

You think you've conned your old grandma
And then you laugh with shameless glee
But every year its just the same;
I let you make a fool of me.
