"The Boy"

We had a boy who herded cows,
When we lived on the farm.
My mother used to worry that,
Someday he'd come to harm.
I'd see him leave in early morn.
His lunch held in a sack
And watch for his return at night,
When he would bring cows back.

We rarely spoke; the pattern of
Our lives was quite apart
And yet, I liked his cheerful smile.
Somehow, he touched my heart.
One night, the cows came straggling in.
The boy could not be seen.
The men were worried, I could tell.
What did his absence mean?

I watched them ride with lanterns high
Until they disappeared.
A long time later, they returned
And as my mother feared,
The boy had been gored by a bull.
He died out there alone.
It was the saddest happening
That I had ever known.

But sadder still, when it was time,
To mark his place of rest,
There was no name, but just "The Boy,
Who did his very best!"

Dear Joyce:  I drew on a couple of incidents in my grandfather's day, when I wrote this. It is sad and sadder that it really happened many years ago.

midnightblues;  Yes, it is sad how someone could be so ignored as long as they did their job. It happened a long time ago but still has an impact! Thanks for commenting.

Dear Marge:  Thanks for reading.  I'm sorry to be late in answering.  I don't know how I got so side-tracked, but it may have been when I had The Flu!  didn't think it would ever leave!

Dear Annie:  Thanks.  It makes me think of my grandfather, as he was only 5 when his mother died and he spoke only French. His father was gone too.  The neighbors took him, but they didn't know his name, so they just called him "Steve".  It was a long time before any of them found out what his name really was.

Italy Angel: Thanks for reading and commenting. Something like this is not likely to happen today. This was a long time ago.
