He walks this mile slowly,
every day without fail.
A tall matchstick kind of man,
with a carved wooden cane.
Face under shadow of the brim,
of his smart grey trilby hat.
He walks this mile slowly,
in sun, in rain in snow.
His face set in thought,
gait painful to observe,
concentration on each step,
along his daily trek.
A tall man, so thin,
smart suit; a size too big,
neck lost in white collar,
shoes -- sparkling clean..
He carries a small bag,
paper creased and brown.
smiles secretly to himself,
at the joy this gift will bring.
At the end of his walk,
In a garden neat and trimmed.
He sits next to his wife
gently takes her tiny hand.
Tissue paper hands,
take from him his gift,
and a smile lights her eyes,
as she eats her favourite sweets.
She doesn't know his name,
she hasn't for four long years,
but he walks a steady mile,
for the smile that lights her eyes.
