Moosatchi and Willow, twin yearling moose ambling down the pathway by my cabin on their long, gangly legs with their chocolate brown eyes furtively glancing north, south, east, and west. Twins browsing on the willow tree leaves, together missing their mom, her warm heart pierced by a visiting hunter's shiny bullet out of season, for no reason, except to fly back home and brag of his manly endeavor. And the twins hang out in my yard now, watching me from a safe distance. I want to touch their soft fuzzy faces and hug their round barrel bodies. But their eyes quietly tell me 'No' They look so gentle and sweet, but many a well-intentioned hand has been rejected, exchanged for a kick in the mouth. So I honor the space between us, and even though I think they trust me, my feet do not cross the line of safety we have all come to accept for the good of myself, and Moosatchi and Willow, my adopted twins. |

Hello Renae. Thanks for reading. Yes it is sad, and it happens every year. Hunting season isn't supposed to include young moose or cows with their babes, and there is a set time of year for it. Actually, moose season just opened up this weekend, and I said a prayer for all the moose to run and hide. I make a lot of hunters angry. My daughter and I are vegetarians. I don't bug other people about eating meat, and I don't preach to anyone, I just quietly tell the animals to hide. Of course, they don't understand, and even if they did, it doesn't mean they would escape. Sorry for going on and on, but it's been a rough day for me, even rougher for some of my four legged friends. |

This is so touching! We have moose here in North Idaho and since we have two creeks that converge just beyond our yard, where there is a wetlands, quite often see one of them munching on something there. They wander up our road sometimes too. We love seeing them! I too say prayers for the animals every hunting season! We are of like minds! I hope the twins do well and come through the hunting season! Thanks Trillium, for not only reading but understanding what I'm about. I actually fed those kids for a month when they weren't getting enough to eat, but was told not to by the 'authorities' Needless to say, I kept feeding them that winter two years ago and even though I call myself a naturalist, I guess I still intervene sometimes with Mother's will of survival of the fittest.(I also like to help elderly people across the street!) The last I saw of the twins, they were healthy and strong, and ready to pop out their own babes. Ah, the sweet taste of victory. |

Midnitesun: Sometimes I think nature needs a little help! We feed raccoons, wild turkeys and deer whenever we think they are going hungry. especially during the winter. We don't try and make pets of them, but they obviously need a helping hand. Betty Lou Hebert |

I enjoyed your story. I was stationed in Alaska during my Army tour. I only saw a few of moose (or is that mooses or miece). A test of a napalm boom was delayed one morning, until a wandering moose was relocated to a safer area. The Army does have a heart. Melton |

Tillium: That's the key, don't try to turn them into domesticated petting zoo attractions. 2dalimit: Thanks for sharing one of the little known acts of TLC the military has often done. I have heard a few similar stories. |
