In the echo of the news, she swayed. We could only watch, frozen in shock The day and the joy died unplayed. Emotions fought to hold on her face, She shook each away, feigned calmness. Lifted her head, faltered...resumed grace. Satin skirts whispered in a breath held hush, As she turned and walked the lonely aisle. Confetti Tears fell from a bride without blush. A hundred people watched until she was gone I felt my heart begin to beat again ...I followed Saw her disappearing into the glare of the sun. Fear pumped in my veins for this fragile maid My legs carried forward my trembling heart Stills from a mind movie of horror played. A strip of ivory waved like a flag on the gate. White petals littered the path like broken dreams I knelt and lifted one, cold and paper thin like fate. The doorway held internal darkness and uncertainty I was drawn inwards, knowing only that I must move, Nauseous stomach churning, as I faced of adversity. Inside the gloomy hallway my fear intensified A mess of glass sprayed across the emerald rug I prayed I wasn’t too late to prevent this suicide The smashed frame of an old black and white snap Showed a couple playing secret smiles to the camera. I reeled in horror at the sight of a bloody teardrop As I climbed the stairway trail in the wake of distress Crimson smudges, a torn bouquet , assaulting my eyes. I feared I was too late , scared of my own uselessness. The nightmare continuedbeyond the open bedroom door I saw her then, across the room , a broken curled up soul And my heart bled out sorrow for this vision on the floor. I lifted and cupped her tear stained face and held her Cheeks deathly white , her lips were bloody and torn She rocked against me, a baby child in the arms of an elder I knew her secret , She had confided only that morning Her sweet love was dying, They were to face it together She clutched the note , delivered in church without warning. He loved her too much to let her witness pain and death Spend the days seeing the sunshine drain from her smile He wanted to picture her smiling as he took his last breath. |
