The Treehouse

When I was young
I built a tree house,
so tall that it
touched the sun.
I furnished it
with my dreams…
all that I aspired to be.

It housed love,
patience, honesty,
and commitment.
It was fueled
by integrity,
unselfishness,
passion and caring.

It was a domain
of great intelligence
and higher learning.
A place to escape to
when escape was needed.
It was the most
private place…by far
that I had ever known.

As I got a little older,
I vacated my tree house
for the tenants changed,
and the fires fueled
by positive energy,
had died down.
It no longer accommodated
the quick wit and bright mind
of the younger days,
and it was no longer
an escape…for it was
constantly in turmoil,
rarely private,
badly abused.

Now I am old
and I sit and dream,
and have recaptured
some of that
which once was lost.
I wish once more
to sit in the house
that touched the sun.
But I have left
it way too late.
All I aspired to
is out of reach,
long gone.

I am tired,
The heights I once upon a time
wished for, are unassailable.
My youth was over-ruled
by growth and wrong choices,
and now, unfortunately
the tree house of my mind
will remain…abandoned.

SPIRIT:  Well written and interesting poem.
I never had a tree house but I sure loved to climb trees when I was young. It definitely was a place to dream!

Thank you - strictly a treehouse of the mind.
