A sticky-orange heat hung over the town; heavy, claustrophobic, airless density. A heat laden with tiny, weightless insects, caught in a hot film of cloying intensity. A distorting haze rose off melting tarmac into suspended traffic fumes -- a psychedelic trip. A blend of food aromas wafted up from open stalls; a perfume of spoiled fruit, doughnuts, and traffic. Dishevelled shoppers beaten into sluggish gaits trailed overheated, irritable children and heavy loads. Shiny, unmopped faces peered out from slowing cars, waiting -- trapped expressions -- on traffic-clogged roads. A quiet, almost siesta mood reigned in the noon hour, market traders lolled, disinterested, in old deckchairs. A line of people queue'd, restlessly for Ice-cream, Cool thirst for quenching ice's, kept them rooted there. Relentless heat beat down a submissive race, hot pavement burned their soles and heels. The sun scorched flesh on unscreened faces; while a cat lay cooling in the shade of car wheels. |

June, The heat reminds me of Yucatan, Mexico. I was there for two weeks in March. You described the intense heat so vividly. Great poem! Patricia 'When you find a dream within your heart, don't ever let it go. |
