(Scossa is the name of a ghost town in Nevada's high desert country, where my family and I lived for 5-1/2 years.) Haunted Silence I know what it's like at Scossa When the moon is floating high And all the stars shine brilliantly Across a springtime sky. I know what it's like at Scossa When the velvet shadows flow And moon-washed peaks thrust Heavenward From valleys lost below. I know what it's like when sage scent Hangs heavily on the air And coyotes call from all around And you have to stand and stare. Loneliness is a throbbing ache That rises from the sands. An ancient pain, linked to the past, That no one understands, Unless they too, have stood like you In this old and haunted place To wonder and absorb the spell Of a hearty, vanished race. I know how the silence hums Till it builds within your ears And you listen-listen-listen For a sound, across the years. I know what it's like, so if you hear A flutter in the air, A stir, a sigh, a murmur, then, You'll know that I am there! Betty Lou Hebert |

Excellent BettyLou ... you drew me right in with this, as if I were standing there experiencing it myself. I loved the flow of this ... almost a whisper, like I wanted to listen closely. Really well done, much enjoyed! Best wishes, /Kit |

Dear Betty Lou Your poetry always 'moves' me. You take me places where I have never been and yet I feel drawn to them. The eyes are the window to our soul. Through your eyes I see beauty and a wonderful soul. Love Isobel ox |
