Soul Surge Beside the sea, the hills are gold With gorse that blooms each spring And in the waves that crash below, I hear the Valkyries sing Their endless and alluring songs, That make you want to go Where you can watch the ageless tides Relentless, ebb and flow. Then standing on a gleaming rock, That's wet with salty spray, I wonder at the majesty That stretches miles away. The awe I feel is multiplied By sight and sense and sound. I'm lost in oneness with the sea. It's really quite profound! Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Betty Lou It is wonderful to be back in 'Passions'. What a beautiful poem. My 'Soul Surged' when I read it. What are Valkyries? Love Isobel |

Isobel: Really nice to see you back! We've missed you. The Valkyries were handmaidens of the god Odin, in Norse mythology. When I wrote this, I was listening to Richard Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" and it seemed that I could hear waves crashing in the background, so it lent itself well to this poem. I should have thought to provide a link. Sorry. Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Marge: It was remiss of me not to provide a link for gorse. It grows so prfusely along the Oregon coast and I never stopped to think, not everyone has seen it. Same thing with the Valkyries. When the seas are stormy, I used to think of them and Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" and it just blended in so well with what I was thinking about when I wrote this. Thanks for the links!
