The Ouzel's Song

My mother used to come and stay,
When all the snow had gone away.
She took such joy in everything,
But never heard the ouzel sing.

We often saw them, she and I.
We'd watch them dip and flit nearby
And though we waited patiently
They just ignored us pointedly!

Now I have many seasons heard
A song of beauty from this bird
And stopped my work to stand entranced
While in my ear, the sweet notes danced!

She won't be coming anymore.
Upon her life, God closed the door
And I regret this one, small thing.
She never heard the ouzel's sing!

I like this a lot and am sorry your mom didn't get to hear it.  I have never heard or seen an Ouzel.  Actually I have no idea what it is like.  Love, Joyce

Joyce:  Thanks! An ouzel is a small, gray and brown bird that sits on rocks in the creek and dips up and down.  some people call them "dippers"  Having the two creeks here, we see a lot of them and their song is gorgeous!  Haven't heard or seen them yet this year.  A bit too early.

Such a beautiful poem Betty Lou.  Actually I have never heard of an Ouzel either.  I don't even know if we get them here in Australia?

Isobel:  These birds are native to the western part of the USA.  They go north into Canada, and Alaska.  As far as I know, that's the only place they are found.

You have many other wonderful birds in your country however, that we don't!  Thanks for reading.

An enchanting piece of writing here Betty Lou, although it was tinged with sadness.
