Where Birches Grow

I like to walk where birches grow,
That early in the autumn show
Their yellow leaves and whispering,
They say farewell until the spring.
That's when long catkins can be seen,
In shades of yellow or pale green
And then the leaves appear in May.
A tender hue against the gray
Of other trunks of trees not blessed
With bark of white, as birch is dressed
And in the summer days, this spot,
Seems so much cooler, when it's hot.

I like the light that filters down
From sunlight on the open crown.
When Indians made their canoes,
It was the birch they came to use.
It seems so graceful and serene.
Among the leaves, brown cones are seen,
With two-winged nutlets, set to fly
Whenever autumn winds blow by
And even in the winter's chill
And somber scene, I come here still!

Hello Betty Lou

Silver birch trees are so very special to me because they remind me of my father's homeland in Sweden.  I have three birch trees in my garden and I love them.  Your words painted a wonderful picture.

Take care......Sue

Sue:  Glad this brought you a happy memory! Thanks for your remarks.  I have one birch in my yard, but a grove of them not far away. I've always loved them!

Such beautiful poetry.  That Birch tree just sprang to life.  Actually, I have never seen a Birch tree.

Betty lou, I always love your poetry and this one is as lovely as ever. I am glad that someone else shares a fascination for the majestic beauty of trees. I think i prefer them to flowers sometimes.

Dear Marge:  I don't suppose birches grow in Florida do they?  I think they need a colder climate.  Thanks for stopping by!

(big angel hugs) Awwwwwwwww, this is precious, sweet friend, I love birches and we have so many here and my Cherokee heritage very much valued the necessity and sacredness of the tree itself! (smiles) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Betty, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
