The Walrus Hunter

In my boat, I go to sea,
Wondering where prey might be.
Does a dark death wait for me,
Or return to family?
Wear my talismans and pray
Luck will ride with me today.
Take me where the walrus play.
One of them won't get away.
When I turn back to the shore,
Everyone will eat once more!

All the village dance and sing,
When they see the food I bring.
Through the sea-ice and the floes,
Where the gray whale, rising, blows!
There my kayak swiftly goes.
As the evening shadow grows,
From my heart there bursts a song.
All around me, sea-birds throng.
I have paddled all day long.
I am Inuit and strong!
