Surprise for Susie

I found her in the summertime.
There's no way for me to know
If 'til this morning's big surprise
She had ever before seen snow.

Sniffing it out so carefully
Testing thoroughly with her nose,
She winced at the cold feel of it
And danced daintily on her toes.

She didn't stay out very long,
Turning 'round and coming back in;
Then recognizing the wonder
She wanted to go out again.

She grabbed up her new Christmas toy
Expecting a fast game of throw,
Not knowing I'm a hot-house flower
Who would turn to ice in the snow.

So Susie dear, you're on your own;
Go out to play and just make do.
When sun is warm and grasses green,
I'll have that game of catch with you!
