(AN: This is to one very special woman who's been a good friend since last year. In a few days it will be a year since I fell in love with her. Again the song Lili Marlene inspired this bit of work.)

My Lili of the Lamplight

Never far from my heart or mind.
One so lovely, caring and kind.
My Lili of the lamp light.
A source of inner warmth and light.

I never realized I'd fall in love with you.
But the feelings inside say, "It's true."
Four months after we first met in class.
A few months later, my heart shatters like glass.

I still remember when we first met.
You were on crutches, your face was wet.
I went out of my way to help you out.
Being a gentleman, without a doubt.

So what if I was late to my next class.
Professor, get over it, I still shall pass.
I've made such a wonderful new friend.
I could not forsee what came around the bend.

December last year I fell in love.
I thanked God for you, for an angel above.
For my Lili of the lamplight.
Loving you at the time felt so right.

I wished not to risk hurting a friend.
To see you cry, my heart it would rend.
Content to cultivate a close friendship.
I didn't forsee my current hardship.

It was in this month of September.
I now distinctly, distinctly remember.
We were studying together Tuesday night.
I felt that inner warmth, seeing the light.

I walked back to my dorm, happy as a lark.
That I'd fallen for such a wonderful woman, hark.
It was you, my Lili Marlene.
Whom I love, despite the angst and pain.

That I endured since Thursday of that week.
Months old is the anguish of which I speak.
'Get over it. Deal with it. Suck it up.'
'Quit moping about like a scolded pup.'
My room mates did say. 'To hell with you!'
I replied, 'I'm hurting deeply, true!'

What could have shattered my heart like glass?
What could possibly have come to pass?
We were studying again, that Thursday night.
When began my grim and ghastly plight.

You asked me if I'd met so-and-so your boyfriend.
And that night my dreams of love came to an end.
I walked back to my room with heavy heart.
Inside I was starting to quiver and fall apart.

I've only wanted you to feel happiness and love.
That I implored from the great Lord above.
I hoped that change would find you in my arms.
But apparently not for me are your charms.

I've gone numb from within and without.
Once full of vigor, I now move numbly about.
'Get over it man.' they said after we had a fight.
Hey roommates, I just lost my inner light.

My Lili of the lamplight.
Why does loving you feel so right?
Even in the angst and pain.
You'll always be my Lili Marlene.

Your memory and friendship my greatest treasure.
In a desert of pain, little oasis of pleasure.

Lily is rather like her namesake in the song. Waiting neath the lamplight.  Not many of us go through life without a broken heart. A very good read. Maggie

Ah, Carl...

You do such an excellent job of writing your feelings. Just know that your true light will find you.

Thank you for this beautiful verse.

With a lump in my throat I kind of choked up, but I loved the way this just flowed throughout the whole write. Sad to read, but I just floated through it with ease to read.
Thanks for sharing your heart.
Love,
Terri~
