Hand in hand
They walked
through the valley of hate,
Those poor little children,
to reach the school gate.

Those brave men of Ulster
had declared war
on these innocent children,
the youngest was four.

Pity was absent from
these dangerous men
as the children ran the
gauntlet again and again.

Stones and missiles
were thrown at these kids
as shameful women
banged dustbin lids.

Children screamed
as bombs were thrown
it seamed like the end
of creation,

The shame of it all
Was the street they must walk
For the right
To an education.

This was widely covered in the media last year.

You have caught a moment in the news that I missed.  Poignantly done.  It took me back to the horrors of the 1960's. Love, Joyce

terri, it was more than sad it was disgusting. I think they finally stopped when they saw themselves on T.V and realised what the rest of the world thought of them. I will never, to my dying day, forget those children. Maggie

This raises this issue above the fray that has been a steady diet of Iraq and dirty dealings in the world...indeed a disgusting event.  Thank you for enlightening this reader.

Maggie:  I remember reading about this in the newspaper and being appalled at how cruel people can be towards children. Your poem has impact Maggie!

I'm no lover of Ulster Unionism or protestant bigotry, in fact I kick with the other foot as we say over here, but one of the things I thought when I was watching the scenes on TV (apart, needless to say, from sheer disbelief at the morons who were chanting, spitting and throwing things)was why the parents subjected their kids to this danger. There were other ways to Holy Cross but some (most certainly not all) Nationalist parents were determined to walk the controversial way through the unionist areas. Fair enough point to make, but do you make it with your seven year olds? I wouldn't. The hatred comes from both sides there, but the Unionists have a bit to catch up as far as shameless manipulation of international opinion's concerned. Doubtless they'll get there one day and the facts will be even harder to untangle.

Craw I was of your oppinion  at first about the children, still am about some. but it would not have worked without them. They should have taken one or two of the elder ones (but who would choose). I don't know, it is a dreadful situation. About kicking with which foot I used to be asked this a lot when I visited Scotland. Then I didn't know what it meant and the answer was with both especially to the amourous young men. Thank you for replying. Maggie

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Maggie, thank you, thank you for posting this awareness poem up, as I have ancestors from Ireland and it breaks my heart to see that the Protestants and Catholics still won't compromise! (sad sigh) On top of it all you have Bush and other political war criminals and disturbing news headlines vulnerable to all the other children, it breaks my heart and I pray it can pass on by, God Bless You, you have a golden heart, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Maggie, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
