A Firm Handshake I remember Daddy bundling to go out in the storm, To bring a load of coal from town to keep his family warm. Sometimes in the midst of winter, that strong, proud dad of mine Would be asking for more credit from Mr. Yeagerline. That good man never turned him down. He knew Dad's word was good; That he would pay the bill in full, as quickly as he could. At Canfield's grocery store we'd say, "Please put it on our bill." Often at Blackburn's drugstore we would charge a needed pill. I used to be embarrassed with no cash for an item, Not knowing those folks needed us just as we needed them. Now those days are over and it is all cash on the line. The small and trusting merchant's gone, as is that dad of mine. I now need to show my picture before I pay by check Or I might use a credit card or something else high tech. The lowly little retailer is no longer around. A business that will trust your word, simply cannot be found. It has been driven out by all the chain stores and the mall. The word that was as good as gold, is now no worth at all. by: Joyce 11/13/03 |

Joyce: There's a world of truth in this one! It was certainly a smipler way of life, when we were growing up! I have to admit I certainly do enjoy my computer, though!! Betty Lou Hebert |

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Joyce, I never got to live during these better and good old times, dearest friend, I don't like malls and I don't like chain stores and love to always go into old towns to find antiques and original crafts and goods! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, this deeply affected my heart, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Joyce, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth |

Joyce~ Those were the days my friend~ And I think what I remember most of all (and it wasn't so terribly long ago)- was when we could walk into our bank, ask to see Jimmy (who happened to have started as a janitor and worked his way up to President) ... didn't have to make an appointment ... and Jimmy would pull open his right-hand desk drawer ... alphabetically thumb through the folders ... find us and ask, "Now, how much you need ?" Jimmy didn't need a computer to punch a gazillion numbers in just to find out who we were ... and sure didn't have to get a 'Board of Directors' to tell him he could loan us money~ Jimmy said he misses the personal touch too~ THIS IS NOSTALGICALLY WONDERFUL~ *Huglets* ~*Marge*~ ~*When the heart grieves over what it has lost, |

Joyce This was definately was a stroll down memory lane for me, back to a time people took time to know and care for others. Today we live in a high tech, impersonal world where all we are to others is a number connected to some credit source. Sad but true, thank for this retro perspective. Very well written.
