Taken I held his hand gently This great man beside me He was smaller now of course As life ebbed away And he lay exhausted I gazed at the closed eyes At the strong face, now drained Smooth unlined forehead Damp now and shining In the glow of moonlight So still he lay, for so long Then I felt the darkness come It tiptoed into the room Chilling the air Gently Piercing my reverie With the knowledge of death I tasted the very bitternes The sorrow of my loss As my heart began screaming In the silence of that moment The hand I held , flinched A tremble of life fluttering Like little explosions in my palm One teardrop traces a line on his cheek Then a small boys voice whispered to me "Mamma are you there ?" " I have been good mamma" My own tears now echoed his I knew he was saying goodbye " Mamma may I have candy now? " " I have been so good " I knew then, It was over In another world, she held his reward I had lost him forever, gone now, She was reclaiming her son And he was no longer in pain |
