(AN: This one goes out to a very special lady. Even though she is involved with another man, she'll always have my heart. I'm a ROTC student so hence the references to military training.)

You Had Me When...

You've had my heart in some way since we first met.
I still recall you on crutches, your face wet.
My heart went out to you in an instant.
Just being a gentleman, not a stalker persistant.

I offered to take your books.
You gave me one of your trademark grateful looks.
Though you declined my gentle offer.
Just trying to be a gentleman proper.

For that's how I was raised.
Told that a good lady would be amazed.
I walked with you to your next class.
Though my professor glared at me, I will pass.

Professor whomever, so what if I was late?
I made a wonderful new friend, it felt great.
I never intended to fall in love.
But other plans had God above.

You had my heart before Christmas break.
It's own rules my heart chose to make.
At the jetport, before flying to our hometowns.
We sat and talked over coffee, with no frowns.

The novel I bought to read before my flight.
I put aside, for our conversation light.
And when your boarding call was announced.
My heart, in love, it was pronounced.

I felt like I was walking on air.
For the first time in years, loving without care.
No fear, no need for mask and wall.
For once I thought love would conquer all.

An arduous second term, you helped me get through.
I could fail a test, but if I'd see you.
My heart would dance unhindered and free.
I fell in love with you, can't you see.

Then during my ROTC summer training.
The sun would shine for me, though it was raining.
Whenever I'd think of you, my pack would be light.
As my heart did see to almost take flight.

Field exercises weren't as hard.
For this camouflage clad bard.
When you'd enter my mind.
With flower and clover the path would be lined.

I'd have no clue of the angst to follow.
One that tore me apart and left me hollow.
It was in balmy, placcid September.
I distinctly and painfully remember.

You had me when I'd see your caring smile.
If I told you how I feel, I fear you'd revile.
My very presence, for other girls did that before.
And it ripped into me down to the very core.

We were doing homework in your dorm room.
I had no idea of the impending gloom.
You asked me had I ever met your boyfriend.
I said no, and I felt my world end.

For as I walked back to my own room in the rain.
Nothing could ease any of my pain.
Lost, dejected, vulnerable, was how I felt.
But still your smile, my heart will melt.

You and he have been together since August.
My dreams of love have crumbled to dust.
But I only want you to be happy, though I'm sad.
I'd rather I suffer forever, than you feel bad.

Even if the years don't find you in my arms.
Even if for him are intended your charms.
Know that you'll always have my heart.
Though emotionally I'm pulled apart.

I'm a serviceman, I can take the pain.
My very training tells me to take a strain.
It's not easy for me to see you with him.
You seem so vital and happy, while I'm so grim.

Please continue to be that way, don't mind me.
But should you ever be in need, I'm always free.
I'll drop what I'm doing to help you out.
Just like the first day we met, without a doubt.

for aught that i could ever read,
