(AN: Just a slight bit of imagining I carried on when I was reading a book about the French Foreign Legion in World War II for my history class and imagined what happened if I joined it in my current plight. Don't worry I'm not gonna really do this.)

Foreign Legion

Boyfriend. I can't begin to describe.
Much hurt contained in one word, wandering scribe.
I've got no other choice.
My feelings can't find their voice.

I must journey to the City of Light.
To put all things right.
By joining the Legion Etrangere.
The Foreign Legion, I don't care.

Stick me in a uniform and hand me a gun.
Put me on sentry duty in the scorching African sun.
It's all that I've got left to me now.
As I imagine his kiss upon your brow.

The Foreign Legion of the desert sands.
Fighting for France in many foreign lands.
Only the soldier to my right and left.
My only ties now, emotionally bereft.

I love you enough to know I must leave.
Despite over a lost chance I shall forever grieve.
Put the rucksack upon my shoulder.
For I know I'll never hold her.

Put the rifle into my hand.
As I march with this great band.
Legio Patria Nostra! The Legion is my home.
Through the desert I shall roam.

Je ne regrette rien.
I have no regrets, for the pain.
That's been done, is more than I can bear.
Thus I must join the Legion Etrangere.

Harsh discipline and enemy fire.
Fear in me they do not inspire.
For they can't be worse that what I now bear.
This is why I must join the Legion Etrangere.

I've got nowhere left to go.
Enjoy your life with him, as you dance slow.
Pay no mind to me in the Saharan heat.
As the Afrika Korps I struggle to beat.

"Counter-attack! On them now!" the order sounds.
"Oui mon capitaine!" we shout, and fire rounds.
We counterattack the stalled German spearhead.
With a rage from love lost clouding my head.

The Legion is my country. Loyal to one another.
Every leader a father, every legionnaire a brother.
A place I finally belong, leaving behind scorn.
My life now of hope is shorn.

"Ja vais un camarade!"
I had a mate, we buried him in his grave.
In the desert sand.
He dies far from his native land.

He was a jilted lover like myself.
He cared for her only, neglecting his health.
She didn't return his love, so he ran away.
Fighting alongside me on this desert day.

A German bullet took him through the head.
And Senain lay their beside me dead.
As his body is lowered into the ground.
Our company gathered there round.

Legionnaires, valiant to the very end.
My soul is gone, ragged and rend.
I hope you don't have to gaze upon my visage.
Haunted and deceived by the desert mirage.

Legionnaire, the only laurel I have to my name.
Because this soul love won't deign to claim.
I see myself in my dead comrade's face.
Eyes closed for the last, gone to a better place?

"May the devils of hell fear your presence."
I've had to deal with rejection's unpleasance.
As did you. But the difference is I live.
Though her love to me she will never give.

I joined to flee from the hurt and strife.
Of my collegiate angsty life.
The Legion is the only place I belong.
I can't do your boyfriend any wrong.

By proclaiming my love for you.
Even though it makes me blue.
I must march with my unit across the desert sands.
Fighting harsh campaigns in foreign lands.

Five years of my life did I pledge.
Hopefully off my angst they take the edge.
All I have is war and fighting left.
For love this heart of mine is bereft.

"Legionnaire! Take your place upon the rampart!"
I do so, robotically, emotionally I'm torn apart.
I take my post in the desert sand.
Garrisoning an outpost in a foreign land.

Sadly this is the only life that I rate.
For love and romance denied me, it's my fate.
Shed not a tear for this legionnaire.
A heartbroken man of the Legion Etrangere.

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Carl, this really stunned me, sweet friend, I know nothing about the military and the terms they use but you sure know your history and use the allusions and your knowledge to relate such deep emotions, yay! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, this is wonderful, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Carl, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

this like all other poems by you are amazing.... the way you write in every detail without overdoing it leaving the mind to create pictures and trends. you have an amazing gift. you are an amazing writer and i hope to god you never forget this and these feelings. they are painful yes but that is just how life is. cruel at times to some it seems always but in reality you are being pushed in 'your' direction. even if you like it or not.
keep up your writing. always.
Mel
