The Short of It!

"We're goinhg west." my daddy said,
"So get your bodies out of bed!"
He clapped his hat upon his head
And took the oxen from the shed!

"Now pack your duds and please be quick
And do be careful what you pick."
He gave the oxen's reins a flick.
The thought of leaving made me sick!

"Be sure you bring some beans and such.
Some coffee, bacon, just a touch
Of molasses, not too much
And NO, we cannot take the hutch!"

We headed out for old St. Joe.
It wasn't very far to go.
We met some folks we didn't kjnow.
My spirits reached an all time low!

We rode and walked those endless days,
Beneath a sun, who's burning rays
Made strange mirages for our gaze,
Hanging in the dusty haze.

How we survived, I only guess.
That we arrived, I must confess
Was due to pride and stubbornness
And other travelers to impress!

Kit:  Thanks so much for your response to this.  I have no idea where it all came from!  I do have pioneer ancestors, but sure hadn't been thinking about them!!

Dear Marge:  I've heard this story, passed down through the family, many times in the past and guess it suddenly needed to be told! Even in a "short" way.

Hi Trillium, it’s nice to meet you. This was really good! It reminded me of a Thanksgiving poem I wrote last year. I just read Coyote’s poem and now this one that reminded me of the great migration out west, on the Oregon Trail. We got a real Northwest theme going on around here this morning. That’s nice.

Thanks for sharing this part of your family’s history with us. That is really special.

Richy

Richy:  Thanks so much for writing and I enjoyed your message.  If my dad had been born during the westward migration, I know he would have been a part of it.  His family history of the old pioneer days, fascinated him.  He did in fact, go to the northern part of Alberta in the early 1920's and file on a homestead.  I spent my early days there. It was totally unsettled country and as close as he could come I guess, to doing what his ancestors did.

Noah:  Thanks and glad it amused you!  It would have been such an adventure to have been part of the wagon train era! I think I would have been one of those who went west!
