Lonesome Country I once lived in a ghost town, Whose name is barely known. A mighty lonesome country, When I stayed there all alone. The wind was always blowing. It made an eerie sound, Whistling through old buildings And ruins on the ground. Below there was a desert And from the cliffs I'd see, Dust devils pirouetting And tearing up the scree. Or thunder storms, gigantic, That were an awesome sight, With clouds illuminated By lightning's brilliant light. Dirt roads ran off to nowhere And one road took you out To a town, some fifty miles. It was a dusty route. Every week or so I went, For groceries and for mail. For books to read and just a change From sagebrush, sand and shale. I was glad to leave it all When that time came and yet, Some enchantment holds me and Those days I can't forget! Betty Lou Hebert [This message has been edited by Trillium (edited 07-27-2001).] |

I really like this Betty and I bet you were writing reams of poetry there by yourself. Love, Joyce |

No matter the place, I suppose every spot we've ever been will hold a place in our hearts. Nice poem, very descriptive. It made me thirsty! |

Joyce: I did write quite a bit of poetry there and mostly on the history of my surroundings. It was an interesting experience. Betty Lou Hebert |

Denise: It was thirsty country so I'm not surprised you need a drink of water! We hauled all our water from a spring 15 miles away. I had two tamarisk trees and I used all our bath water to keep them alive. They reqarded me by blooming beautifully every June. Betty Lou Hebert |

Elizabeth: Thanks for your comments. The high desert country has it's own beauty but it is a harsh environment to live in, for man and beast. We spent 5-1/2 years there as my husband was working our gold mining claims. Never did hit the "mother lode". Betty Lou Hebert |

I can see the images very clearly. I'm sorry you didn't hit the mother lode, but you write beautifully. Melton |

Melton: Thanks for the nice comments. We did make enough to live on for the time we were there, and the experience was certainly worth a lot too. Betty Lou Hebert |
