When Tides Are Low When tides are low and days are fair, I go to see what's waiting there Beside the rocks, where weedy fronds Drip salty tears in briny ponds. For in these pools are strange delights. Each offers its array of sights. The shells and stones of varied hue. Marine life that I like to view. On some days, there's a rare surprise. Once, before my startled eyes, Appeared a greenish, globe of glass, Entrapped within a quaking mass Of pale anemones that shrank, As my hand brushed accross their rank. My treasure was a fishing float, That had been lost from some far boat. It drifted here through time and tide Until it found this place to hide. I watch the tiny fish that dart Within the shallow depths and start To see what ocean bottoms might Appear to us, if in our sight. Around my ankles, waters foam. I know I must be heading home And so I make a slow retreat, Encumbered by reluctant feet, To leave the beach, until next day The tide-pools beckon me to play! So peaceful and serene. No wonder you're reluctant to leave. Thanks, Melton |

A day at the beach, to pause and reflect and open our eyes to the small and large wonders that are there. Reminds of my own pensive beach time...perhaps i will go tomorrow. |

worddancer: Thanks for commenting. I envy you being able to go to the beach tomorrow! I'm lucky if I get to go once a year for a week or two. Betty Lou Hebert |

BettyLou~ What a GORGEOUS penning !!!! 'Around my ankles, waters foam. I know I must be heading home And so I make a slow retreat, Encumbered by reluctant feet, To leave the beach, until next day The tide-pools beckon me to play!' Oh ... Betty, I can't wait for my hubby to get home from work. His most favorite place on any beach is the little tide pools. He can stay and stare into the water for what feels like hours. Or as you say so eloquently: Around my ankles, waters foam. I know I must be heading home And so I make a slow retreat, Encumbered by reluctant feet, To leave the beach, until next day The tide-pools beckon me to play! He's going to love this and so do I. Huggles ... |

Dear Marge: Thanks for your lovely remarks. This is based on an actual happening on the beach at Newport, Oregon. I saw the float and "arranged" for Ron to find it. A highlight of his life! Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Marti: I hope your husband does enjoy this poem. I'm mesmerized too, by the tidepools and in fact, have even had the tide turn and catch me day dreaming! Betty Lou Hebert |

Sue: The picture gave me a jolt as the little boy looks so much like our only grandson. He was killed by a speeding car just before his 10th birthday. This boy could be his twin! It's a beautiful picture. Thanks. Betty Lou Hebert [This message has been edited by Trillium (08-04-2003 10:40 PM).] |
