Out of the Night Up north, a mighty river flowed And overhead, Aurora glowed. Out in the midst of virgin land, There lay a homestead. One man's hand Had carefully brought it to life And there, alone sometimes, his wife Was often left to carry on The daily chores, when he was gone. One night, as she prepared to sleep, She heard a voice call, rough and deep. She started up, to listen for Some footsteps coming to her door. But nothing happened, so she lay Just dozing off, when far away, She could hear that someone spoke. It didn't sound like neighbor folk. But someone called; who could it be At this late hour? She could see No movement, anywhere nearby. A quarter moon defined the sky. She stood there watching, at the pane And then the voice called once again. A large bird swooped from tree to tree. An owl is what it proved to be! An owl, who prowled to look for prey And frightened her in such a way. She laughed at how she'd been mis-led And climbed back in her cosy bed. A tale to tell her family Became part of her history! Joyce: This happened to my mother when I was a baby. She was often alone for a couple of weeks at a time, on the homestead and it was very wild country. Her name was "Ruth" and when she first heard this owl, she thought it sounded like someone calling her name. It worried her as she thought maybe someone who knew her, was hurt in the woods and calling for help. She was really relieved to see the big owl! Betty Lou Hebert |

kitkat: It's always a relief when you can identify strange sounds you hear at night. I heard wolves howling really early this morning, just before daylight. Guess the full moon was getting to them! We don't often hear them anymore, so it was a treat! Betty Lou Hebert |

junemac: Thanks for your remarks! Do you have big owls where you are, like the great horned owl? I'm not familiar with the types you have in Britain. Betty Lou Hebert |
