Storm Flags Flying It was a dark and stormy day, But we went sailing anyway! The flags were flying everywhere, To say small boats had best beware, But since our boat was large in size, We didn't think we were unwise. The Sound was dark as witches brew. A rolling sea, from which spray flew, Seemed quite exciting for awhile. Rough weather always was our style! But suddenly, our mainsail tore. The wind was fiercer than before. As I struggled with the helm, It looked like waves would overwhelm Our craft, which now began to shake. I had to watch my captain take A stance on deck, one arm around The mast and bring the sail to ground. It wildly soared and tore again And now we were deluged by rain. It seemed he battled endlessly, Until he finally had it free And in the cockpit, safe at last, We worked to make the lines all fast. Once we stowed our gear away, We'd had enough of this wild day. The motor sounded like a song And as it moved our boat along, I said a thankful prayer that we Would soon be off that angry sea! Hi Bob: It really was an adventure! We were sailing on Puget Sound as we lived in Seattle for a number of years. What I didn't tell everyone is that I was in the cabin getting ready to make coffee, when the mainsail blew out and when my Husband yelled at me to "get up on deck right now" I threw the coffee pot, with the fresh coffe grounds and they went into the bilge. We never could get the smell of coffee out of the boat after that! Betty Lou Hebert |

Joyce: Thanks. I was so glad to get on land again I almost didn't want to go out again, but of course, I did, many times. Betty Lou Hebert |

Wesley: Glad you enjoyed the poem. I was afraid of deep water too, but got coerced into sailing anyway and grew to feel quite comfortable at sea, until the day I wrote of. That reinforced all my earlier fears. I have many nice memories, but I can't say I was sorry when we moved inland! Betty Lou Hebert |
