Wild West Weekly

I tried to hide it from my mom,
I did not want her mad at Dad;
But I'd sneak his Wild West Weekly
On every single chance I had.
They were Daddy's small indulgence
These stories of the old wild west;
Bought it when Mom wasn't looking
And put it in his sheepskin vest.
There were heroes, there were villains.
The heroes won out in the end.
They were good and honest cowpokes
And their horse was their best friend.

I could not wait for Saturday,
That's when my daddy went to town;
There would be another weekly,
Whenever that day rolled around.
Mama scolded, called them novels;
As if she thought all novels bad.
Don't know what she had against them,
But if she caught me she'd be mad.
I would take one of them with me
When I was sent to herd the cows.
Another good old spot for reading
Was in one of the big haymows.

Every issue had a story
About Billy West and his pard,
Buck Foster, who stuck with him,
Sort of acting like his guard.
They didn't smoke, nor drink nor swear.
They never, ever would say ****.
They showed respect to every girl
And always called her mother Ma'am.
Danger seemed to follow Billy
And old Buck must help him out;
For the land was full of outlaws
Who didn't want those two about.

Mama sometimes got suspicious,
When I was gone too long a while,
But my daddy would defend me
And then he'd wink at me and smile.
Now my daddy rides in Heaven
It's been fifty years this year;
And my mama's gone to join him,
No wicked novels hidden there.

Joyce:  This is a great story and written so well.  Really enjoyed reading it.  I can really relate toit also, as i was always smuggling anything I could find to read, out of the house or up to my bedroom.

Reminders of the Saturday Morning Pictures where all of us children in town would line up to get in. Heroes galore - Roy, Hopalong, Some unknowns and thrown in for good measure Superman.  Then all those B movies to see, didn't matter how bad the action movie was, as long as the hero was goodlooking and a winner. Loved those Westerns. Brilliant as usual Joyce and loads of fun. Thank you.

Hi Joyce,
As you can see, I'm winging through some of the older posts. This is great.  You paint some wonderful images of things that I have not known.
Love, BArb

Joyce I am SO glad this came back up as I hadn't the pleasure of reading it.  Absolutely heartwarming, and funny.  I printed this one out for my "favorites" book.  Well done!
