Great holly, you have stood for years, Right next to your own precious mate. She was a fruiting holly tree, Until she met a dreadful fate. She was set on fire by vandals And was burned right down to the ground. I think I heard you weeping low Over her sad and blackened mound. You've been alone for thirty years, And still mourning, it well may be, For your beautiful companion With her red berry jewelry. She'd be so proud of how you stand, So handsome, so stately and tall. You shelter many tiny birds In your branches from spring to fall. Your leaves are very dark and dense. Nests are safe in your sturdy care. The hawks and rains and summer storms Will not find them hiding in there. You stand near my picture window, Saving me from the western sun; Faithfully doing your duty, Until God says your work is done. You've not moved in a century, Since another planted you there. I know your sadness in being Alone, when you once were a pair. by Joyce 6/27/01 [This message has been edited by Joyce Johnson (edited 06-27-2001).] |

Joyce; beautiful! I understand the analogy, for I too, am now alone. It is a difficult task to do, but God has a plan and purpose. Hopefully to shelter and give care as the holly tree...Ellie A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails. |

Lovely Joyce! One can become so attached to a tree I find. I have a maple that lost about 1/3 of it's trunk and branches in our 1996 ice storm and I had to fight everyone to keep the remaining tree and give it a chance. It survived and is not as symmetrical of course, but I love to look out and see it every day. To me it is a symbol of life itself and how we can survive even the most painful disaster. *blinks* Again, browsing around.... I found this lovely gem of a poem. It's great how you relate to the lonely tree! BWA |
