The Bitter Season Along Alaska's rugged shore And on a bay that few explore, There stands a rustic lodge, remote And only reached by plane or boat. The winter months find it asleep. Except for two young folk who keep The furnace going and take care Of anything that's needed there. They loved the sea life they would see And eagles perched in each tall tree. All through the season of the snow, They'd don their snowshoes and then go Down to the dock, where kayaks stacked, Reminded them how much they lacked Mobility of movement, so, One sunny day, they thought they'd go Across the bay, to where they knew Another couple wintered too. They took a two-man boat and went. The freedom of this action lent An air of gaiety and they Were singing, laughing, on their way. Half way across, the wind arose. It blew salt spray and soon their clothes Were covered with an icy rime. The waves grew taller in no time And soon their boat was over-turned, But they remembered what they'd learned, And finally made their way to land. The woman was too weak to stand. Her husband left her and he ran On clumsy feet to find a man Who'd help him carry her from shore. It was a little while before He and the people from the inn Returned and found, to deep chagrin, The sudden storm that felled his wife, Had also stolen her young life And carried her into the deep, Where all Poseidon's victim's sleep! (big hugggsssssss) Oh Betty, this is very sad, sweet friend, my heart goes out to the losses and the families of their loved ones, it can be so rough in the ocean up there and I have heard many stories like this! (sad sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, this has my vote, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Betty, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Noah: Thanks so much for your kind comments. Their story has haunted me since I heard about it last winter and I finally felt I should write about it. I did not know the couple involved, personally, but through a neighbor. Very tragic! Betty Lou Hebert |

At first I was thinking "Walt Whitman" then I thought "how sweetly tragic" Very, very good work. Yesterday is ash, tomorrow is smoke; only today does the fire burn. |

beautifully composed dear lady. A sad event but so typical of the uncertainty of life. the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

A bitter season indeed. A very tragic tale, but very well written and kept my attention all the way through. You do know how to tell a story even though this is based on true life as you stated above. Glad that I found and that I am able to vote for your poem. God bless. -Bob |

Not all stories end happily but nevertheless they need telling to. You did an excellent job here. I cried. The fact that this story has its roots in truth beg even more for its telling. You have my vote! Sherry Cherish the good memories of the past and look forward to the adventure called Tomorrow. But above all... be kind to yourself today. |

I should have known from the title that this poem did not end well. I was hoping it would. You wrote so perfectly. You captured the essence of their love, and gave hope all the way to the end. A great story, but a sad one, too. |

I can recall hearing a story such as this more than once while living in Alaska, where the sea often takes her bounty from the people, even as we take ours from the sea. |

Midnitesun: Thanks so much for commenting. Alaska is a rugged country and requires much of those who live there, I think. But, it's so beautiful and majestic, it's worth it. I only lived there for a year, but I dream of going back some day to see more of the state and it's people. Betty Lou Hebert |
