From out the pit, there blows a breeze
So frigid you can feel it freeze
The very thoughts that cross your mind.
The rocky walls are partly lined
With lichens, old and dry as time,
Bedecked with crystal beads of rime.
If you go down and look around,
The tunnels run off underground.
Each one in a new direction,
Giving back no light reflection.

I wonder where this wind began?
Some cavern, never seen by man,
That lies deep in the earth's great heart?
Or did it have it's icy start
Upon a frozen mountainside
And there perhaps, a mighty slide
Did open up an ice-cave's door,
Through which these winds began to pour?
Then down the convoluted ways
It flowed through tunnels like a maze,
Until it found this chimney hole
And burst forth like a wailing soul!

I thought this was a good piece. You painted the picture well.

Joyce:  Thanks.  We visited the wind caves  in Southern Idaho many years ago and they were really impressive.

wow I'd like to see it now

Marge:  Thanks.  The wind caves are south of Kuna, Idaho, which is a small town south of Boise.  It was very interesting.  A strange phenomena for sure.

Moon Dust:  That area may have been developed by now into some sort of a park. When we were there in the 60's, there weren't even railings around the holes in the ground, that the wind escapes from. Potentially dangerous.

I'm not sure what the science of it is, but several caves I have been in were windy in at least parts. So windy in places that I could barely keep my eyes open, even at a squint. The dust almost stung the skin.

Red_Feather:  They are strange places aren't they?  The wind was so cold where we were in southern Idaho, it felt like it came right off of ice. It was very hot outside but once down in the chimney and tunnels, we nearly froze before we could get out again. There was a low, moaning sound coming from the tunnels too, which was caused by the wind, I'm sure, but made it rather spooky!

An enjoyable piece. I have been to the Carlsbad Caverns and the Wonder Caves. The view of "under" is awesome. Thanks for the memories.

Melton:  Thanks for commenting.  These wind caves are the only ones I've been in. I would like to see some of the larger caverns but haven't made it yet.

Dear Betty Lou

I love this poem but too eerie for me.  I'm sure if I was in that cave I would be 'wailing' too!!!

Dear Isobel:

This was an eerie experience and I didn't like it one bit, when Will, Ellie and Bogie went down an old ladder to the bottom of the shaft. I was glad we had no flashlight, or I'm sure they'd have gone exploring. They are much braver than I am!!
