A Splendid Tree When I was young and had the time, I often used to go and climb Up in a tree where I could spy On all the people passing by. They never knew that I was there, Sitting in my secret lair, Listening to the conversations. Friends and neighbors and relations. Many things came to my ear They would rather I not hear! I never dreamed it wasn't right To eavesdrop from my hidden height! I'd wander home at dinner hour, Loathe to leave my lofty bower. Mother'd look at me and say: "Just where have you been gone all day?" "Oh, here and there." was my reply And then I'd set to work and try To be industrious so she Wouldn't be too mad at me! I didn't do this every day, But now and then I'd slip away And climb as high as I could go. Branches waving to and fro, Caused a restless, swishing sound, Making music all around. Leaning on the trunk, I'd stare At all the moving leafage there And wish that I could always be, Living in some splendid tree! Oh, what I wouldn't give today, To spend an hour just that way! Betty, you need to put one in Reflections for a book selection. You'll get more votes there I think. Love, Joyce |

Yu Lan: Thanks for commenting. Nice to hear from another "tree climber". My favorite tree was a big poplar that had wonderful places to sit with your back against the trunk! Betty Lou Hebert |

this reminded me of the fort I have out in the backyard... though I'm afraid the floor will fall through.. I think tomorrow I'll go out there. I miss it. but there's no one to spy on! ..thank you for this, I really enjoyed it. Always, Alyssa - And so it was that time stood still - (blink, breathe, stand, fight) [This message has been edited by GG (03-02-2003 05:28 AM).] |

Alyssa: You are lucky to have a tree fort! I'm sure it is much more comfortable than sitting on a big branch, with the trunk to lean on, but that really wasn't too bad! It was such a special time in my life, when I was a tree climber! Betty Lou Hebert |

this is so Norman Rockwell its scary! what a great read! the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

pegasus: I hadn't thought of this poem as being Norman Rockwell, but I do see the association, now that you mention it. An all American childhood pastime, climbing trees. Eavesdropping too! I can remember chastising my little grandson, for opening the flap for the mailbox, from outside, so he could listen to what was being said inside! Thanks! Betty Lou Hebert |

bestgirl911: Thanks for commenting. I guess most of us spent some time in trees when we were growing up and making happy memories. Betty Lou Hebert |
