Fire Hydrant I stand in the street, People pass me by, Not knowing I exist, Just an object on the ground. Day after day, My paint fades away, Time standing still, Hoping for a thrill. Then low and behold, Someone realises that I exist, An emergency service, That helps the flames not to kill. Building set alight, Frantic footsteps on the ground, Lots of screaming and shouting, The flames lighting up the midnight sky. Silence. Sigh of relief, Flames all gone, Building left scorched, Ladies, gentlemen and children bow their heads, Another rescue, Completed successfully. Standing in the street, I've been used, People forget my existence, I've served my purpose. |

You did a good job with your subject. So many things in life are there to be used only occasionally and dismissed the rest of the time. But oh, when they are needed they really are. Welcome to the Corner. Joyce [This message has been edited by Joyce Johnson (12-04-2002 10:00 AM).] |

Lonestar: This was an interesting poem. We are surrounded by so many objects we give little or no thought to, but they are all important in their own way. Enjoy your stay here. Betty Lou Hebert |

I felt this was an unsual subject yet oh so true. I feel as though life passes me by at times and I think if you look at the meaning behind th poem it can apply to so many things. I am also new to this forum but the people are very friendly. Enjoyed the read, dx |

Welcome Lonestar!!! I really like this one, cos to me it is a metaphor for how we treat each other in life.....never really appreciating someone until we desperately need them, then they are oh so important and then they fade back into insignificance again. Like the fire hydrant. I feel like that fire hydrant at times and I'm sure I have made other ppl feel that way too unintentionally... Thanks for a good read...u know I like ur poetry... Luv, Liz xx |

Many thanks, im in awe with such the warm welcome i've received here. As I've said before, i've never really shown my poems to people other than my friends before. Fire Hydrant was something I've never tried before, but I'm glad that many have enjoyed it. Love reading all your poems. Take care Lonestar |
