Halloweens of Old I remember when Halloweens Were all tricks and no treats. The farmers were mostly too poor To hand out many sweets. Our mama sometimes let us have Apple bobbing parties, Or made us her good popcorn balls. Appetites were hearty. The big boys went out later on A little fun to find. If there was a bit of mischief Our neighbors didn't mind. It was funny to see the things On barn roofs the next day. The fellows really meant no harm. It was a form of play. My daddy would make them go back The neighborhood around; And offer to go on the roofs To get machinery down. My daddy hated having the Outhouse toppled over. To help him guard against this trick, He untied old Rover. Rover was protective, he would Give chase to miscreants. Next day at school we'd look for kids With patches on their pants. Pants that were torn, still must be worn. Their mamas did their best To keep their children clothed and schooled; And did without the rest. There was no cash for simple fun, Real life was so demanding, That when it came to Halloween Most folks were understanding. Joyce: This brought back lots of memories of Halloween in the country. Growing up in Canada, we asked for "Halloween apples" and that's all we ever got, unless someone slipped an onion into a sack on a dark porch. I found a few of those and it was a favorite trick of my dads! Great poem. Betty Lou Hebert |

We smaller ones didn't get to go out trick or treating in those days. Our halloweens were coloring pumpkins at school and whatever our mom thought up for us. No candy. Joyce |

I'm afraid I must fess up and admit I fall into the ""boys will be boys on halloween" category..nice read Joyce. the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

Hi,Joyce, how have you been doing?I've been away for a bit.I enjoyed this.It made me remember happenings when I was a child. My house was in the suburbs,a nice neighborhood. But mine was one of four houses that abutted a walkway in the middle of the block,so being that I was not one of the "In" or popular kids,my home was one of the prime targets for being absolutely bombarded by every rotten vegetable known to man!The large tin porch roof we had didn't help much either. It sounded like I lived in Beirut!Other than that,I did have some fun on some of those Halloweens of Old.Thanks for sharing your memories. Joyce~ Reckon in 'Halloween's of Old' ... I can recall going Trick or Treating with my big brother .. HE did the 'soaping' of the windows if we didn't get a 'Treat'~ That's my story ... and I'm sticking to it ! ![]() *Crossed-FingerHuggies* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |
