Once upon a time, In the Land of Rhyme When their Art did wane, And there was felt the strain As if all had been done before, The end lay ahead, and no more There stepped up a Doctor of sorts, Who spoke to the kingdom's cohorts: "While right now, to you it seems, You've come to the end, of your dreams I assure you, the end is not near, Of what all we Wordsmiths hold dear! And I'll show you this is true, If thus my advice, you will do!" And with that his fingers he snapped, Then he smirked and started to laugh "Your old rhyming ways you must leave, For it is that, which makes you grieve Think not in terms of well thought lines, Forbid those dungeons take captive your rhymes Let RHYME once again reign among you as King, With a bold step and a fanciful swing Set the pace, now don't you dare dote, On some boring detail or worn antidote If You will let RHYME be King- Then give your words life, Resound with a Zing! A dippity Dat Or a Bee-Bop or two, A winsome dance Or the old soft-shoe-- RAZZLE, DAZZLE--- Make your poetry Fun, For Young and Old Yes, for everyone! Before you know it You can't stop yourself, And Rhythym & Rhyme Will be off the shelf! Instead of a funeral A Party will ensue, The Kingdom will rebound With a Dippity-do! See what I mean-- This is a new scene With a Zippy new vocabulary, Forget thoughts of the Mortuary!" And then with a Jumpity, Bumpity Salute-- He made a quick exit With his Jestor's suit! And the Rhyme Realm, that day was changed, Prescribed by a Doctor, who helped rearrange The thinking of millions to help make Rhyme fun, Giving a sense of that New Life had begun-- A lively revival With a POW! And a PUNCH! To show that Rhymeland Was NOT "out to lunch!" And who was that Mentor Who turned it all loose? None other than he, The Beloved, Dr. Suess! David: I loved this poem. Being a fan of Dr. Seuss, it really appealed to me. all my children have grown up with me reading all of his books to them. Special memories! Thanks. Betty Lou Hebert |
